In a study carried out in 2011 a group of 24 subjects with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) were administered CBD and asked to carry out tasks such as public speaking, which had previously caused them significant stress. These results indicated that a single dose of CBD can reduce the anxiety-enhancing effects in patients indicating that CBD inhibits the fear of speaking in public. This is exciting news for all of those sufferers sitting in meetings dreading the call to the stage. There are several other studies linked to anxiety reduction and CBD including one in 2015 looking into Cannabidiol, (CBD) as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders. In this study several pre-clinical conclusions were reached:
- CBD has been shown reduce contextually conditioned fear responses.
- CBD blocked reconsolidation of aversive memories.
- Preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviours relevant to multiple disorders, including PTSD, GAD, PD, OCD, and SAD
So overall, existing preclinical evidence from human studies strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders. There is of course more work to be done in this area to conclusively confirm these properties and full clinical trials are under way to give us a clearer understanding on how effective CBD can be.
