Anxiety is the most common mental wellbeing issue in the UK, with over 8.2 million cases of anxiety reported in 2013. We will all feel anxious at some point, it’s a completely natural reaction to danger or stress, but due to recent events of the pandemic anxiety numbers are being pushed higher and higher. People are now turning to CBD, a natural, non-intoxicating, legal compound extracted from hemp plants to ease their anxiety and stress levels.
CBD for Stress & Anxiety
The science supports that CBD bonds to receptors in your body that are linked to maintaining your hormone balance and the regulation of many internal processes like pain sensation, emotion, and your levels of stress and anxiety.
This process involves a biological system in your body called your Endocannabinoid System or ECS. The ECS is a system like many others such as your immune or cardiovascular system. CBD connects with receptors in the ECS around your body potentially helping with a variety of ailments dubbing this compound as a suggested multi targeting treatment solution.
The CBD market is evolving fast with many new targeted products emerging to treat anxiety. The aim of these CBD products are to help calm you down, steadying your nerves at times when you need to deliver your goals, such as before an important work meeting. There is also credible scientific evidence to support these wellness claims.
What Scientific Research is There to Support CBD for Stress and Anxiety Relief?
Research looking into the overall reduction of anxiety and the anxiolytic effects of CBD have demonstrated strong links supporting these properties from various studies including volunteers submitted to anxiety induced procedures. This is probably not a study that most people would enter as this involved exposure to several stress induced environments including the anxiety caused by public speaking.
In a study carried out in 2011 a group of 24 subjects with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) were administered CBD and asked to carry out tasks such as public speaking, which had previously caused them significant stress. These results indicated that a single dose of CBD can reduce the anxiety-enhancing effects in patients indicating that CBD inhibits the fear of speaking in public. This is exciting news for all of those sufferers sitting in meetings dreading the call to the stage. There are several other studies linked to anxiety reduction and CBD including one in 2015 looking into Cannabidiol, (CBD) as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders. In this study several pre-clinical conclusions were reached:
- CBD has been shown reduce contextually conditioned fear responses.
- CBD blocked reconsolidation of aversive memories.
- Preclinical evidence conclusively demonstrates CBD’s efficacy in reducing anxiety behaviours relevant to multiple disorders, including PTSD, GAD, PD, OCD, and SAD
So overall, existing preclinical evidence from human studies strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders. There is of course more work to be done in this area to conclusively confirm these properties and full clinical trials are under way to give us a clearer understanding on how effective CBD can be.
What CBD Products are Available for Anxiety?
The CBD market has a wide variety of products tailored to help you manage stress which also include other botanicals to support this aim. The best approach is to take your CBD product around 30 minutes before your stressful activity to calm you ready for the challenge. Always start at a lower concentration and build up to a level that works for you and your body as this will give you flexibility in the number of doses you can take before reaching the 70mg recommended daily dose.
At Mission C we have developed the Day & Night CBD oils, that are designed to help you reduce stress and anxiety, helping you to feel energised each day and get a deeper sleep, night after night. An additional benefit you will find if you choose our CBD oil, is your CBD generally comes within MCT oil (medium chained triglycerides), which absorbs into your body fast giving you an additional burst of energy. Also consider that oils absorb more CBD into your body at a faster rate than edible products such as cbd gummies, tablets, capsules, cbd balm and creams making these fast-acting options for a good night’s sleep.
