CBD offers a natural solution to many skincare concerns. Because of this, CBD has become a very desirable ingredient in the skincare industry over the last few years. Given the backdrop of political instability, global lockdowns, and a feeling of underlying anxiety throughout society, it’s no wonder that stress has crept into all of our lives. These stresses and anxieties can manifest themselves into our skin. CBD can help us return to a state of balance through interaction with our Endocannabinoid systems (ECS). This allows our skin time to heal and breathe and may help us to radiate a little more confidence in everyday lives.
Does CBD help with Oily Skin?
Genetics, hormones, or an imbalanced diet are some of the caused of oily skin and acne breakouts. About 95% of people aged 11 to 30 are affected by acne to some extent. Scientific studies were carried out in 2014 from the University of Debrecen, Hungary, which determined that CBD could help control oily skin. CBD interacts with our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in particular our CB1 receptors to prevent our sebaceous glands in the skin producing excess sebum (the oil released into our skin). In doing so it also helps our skin restore balance and prevents inflammatory proteins being produced which means we are prone to fewer impurities like acne, pimples, spots, or blackheads.
Does CBD help with Dry Skin?
CBD interacts with our bodies to restore balance to our sebum levels and reduce the over production of oil levels in the skin. But CBD has actually also been shown in pre-clinical trials to aid with dry skin by increasing oil production. It depends entirely on your genetic make-up, meaning that CBD will help your skin to find the perfect oil level no matter your skin type, oily, dry, or even combination!
One of the leading studies in this area was taken out by German Scientists in 2006. They assembled 14 patients who were suffering from dry and itchy skin conditions to trial the impact of CBD creams on their underlying conditions, when applied to the skin. What they found was that 86.4% of patients reported a reduction in dryness and itch. There was also further evidence reported by the American Academy of Dermatologists, which also outlined that CBD could help to ease a number of skin symptoms including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema.
Does CBD help with Wrinkles?
As we become older, there is a reduction in our skin cell production and our skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic making it more prone to wrinkles. CBD can help work against the natural ageing process and stimulate the growth of new skin cells. A scientific study was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 2011, which found that CBD through interaction with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), can regulate and promote the life cycle of basal skin cells, which may lead to younger-looking skin.
An over exposure to sunlight, mainly the UV component, can break down the collagen production and elastic fibres in the skin, leading to an increase in wrinkles. UV rays cause oxidation, a chemical process that produces free radicals in our skin, which in turn cause cell damage. CBD has been shown in pre-clinical trials to be a powerful antioxidant, which means it terminates these chemical reactions. This means CBD face creams and moisturisers helps protect our skin against external factors such as UV rays and pollution. This all helps preventing visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles.
Does CBD help with Anxiety?
Anxiety and stress build up in the body can manifest itself into the skin through acne breakouts and oily skin. Anxiety stems from a long-term chain of thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences. Your body releases a chemical called cortisol when you are feeling stressed or anxious, or when there is an emergency, your body is hit with a burst of cortisol, which normally stabilises shortly afterwards. But a lot of us are experiencing low level anxiety and cortisol is slowly being released into our bodies in our everyday lives, causing long term inflammation in the body and skin.
CBD is not going to help remove those feelings, but it can help to ease the physical symptoms. CBD can help reduce levels of anxiety and cortisol, as it is an all-natural powerful anti-inflammatory. CBD has been shown in pre-clinical trials to have a remarkable effect at calming symptoms of anxiety through promoting the production of serotonin, the chemical that contributes to health and wellbeing. The less stress and anxiety that you are experiencing the less likely this will start to manifest into your skin. Applying our CBD creams or CBD oils to the temple or wrist is recommended, as these are the points on the human body where the skin is the thinnest, allowing a faster route into the bloodstream.
CBD is perfect for all skin types
CBD benefits all skin types; oily, dry and combination, through the balance of our sebum (oil) levels. It also helps with wrinkle reduction through strong anti-oxidation and the stimulation of new cell growth and reduces anxiety and stress levels through anti-inflammation. This has all been backed by scientific studies and pre-clinical trials to date!
